Engaging Potential Clinical Trial Sites

Writer: Dr. Sergey SikoraDr. Sergey Sikora

Embarking on a Proof of Concept (PoC) clinical trial with a limited budget, such as $2 million, presents unique challenges for small biotech companies. Securing partnerships with major medical centers is crucial, but competing with the financial capabilities of large pharmaceutical companies requires strategic approaches.

Here are key strategies to effectively engage potential clinical trial sites:

  1. Highlight Long-Term Collaboration Opportunities

Emphasize the potential for ongoing partnerships beyond the initial PoC study. Successful early-phase trials can lead to larger, more lucrative Phase IIb studies, often financed by big pharma. By participating early, centers position themselves as preferred sites for future trials, ensuring sustained revenue streams.

  1. Offer Intellectual Prestige and Innovation

Major medical centers value contributions to groundbreaking research that can transform therapeutic areas. Involvement in innovative studies enhances their reputation, attracts top-tier researchers, and opens doors to high-budget clinical trials in the future.

  1. Leverage Established Relationships

If you have a history of bringing industry-sponsored trials to a center, leverage this relationship. Centers are more inclined to collaborate on underfunded trials with partners who have previously provided significant research opportunities.

  1. Propose Comprehensive Budget Solutions

Maximize the center's revenue by offering to allocate the entire trial budget to them, including Clinical Research Organization (CRO) costs. This all-inclusive approach reduces financial risk for you and ensures the center receives optimal compensation. Typically, the cost of the trial without the CRO is approximately equal to the CRO cost.

  1. Streamline Communication and Transparency

Initiate Contact Through Trusted Connections: Reach out to key opinion leaders (KOLs), medical directors, or department heads within your network to facilitate introductions to the relevant departments.

Present Clear and Concise Proposals: In your initial communication, specify the number of patients, maximum budget, willingness to pay the entire budget if they provide CRO services, and disclose your available funds. Clearly outline the advantages for the Principal Investigator (PI), as discussed above.

Establish Timelines for Decision-Making: This approach enables you to determine within approximately one month whether the center is willing to conduct the trial within your financial constraints.

By implementing these strategies, small biotech companies can effectively engage major medical centers for clinical trials, fostering partnerships that extend beyond financial transactions to collaborative relationships built on mutual benefit and shared scientific goals.
